چکیده

Introduction: Spinal diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is limited by severe motion artefacts and a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Current gradient coils, with low-eddycurrent designs, open the field for the usage of monopolar Stejskal-Tanner sequences [1]. With these schemes, smaller echo times and therefore a higher SNR can be achieved. Only a few studies of lumbar spinal DTI in humans already exist [2, 3], with a coarse and mainly sagittal acquisition. The aim of this preliminary study was to optimize the sequence parameter for high resolution axial spinal DTI of the lumbar spinal cord and to show relevant clinical implications.

Effect of Physiological noise on Thoraco-Lumbar spinal cord fMRI in 3T Magnetic field

Introduction: Functional MRI methods have been used to study sensorimotor processing in the brain and the Spinal cord. However, these techniques confront unwanted contributions to the measured signal from physiological fluctuations. For the spinal cord imaging, most of the challenges are consequences of cardiac and respiratory movement artifacts that are considered as signifi...

Spinal Cord Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) and 1H-MR Spectroscopy (MRS) at 1.5T and 3T

Introduction MRI is an important modality in the assessment of spinal cord (SC) diseases. Conventional examinations are based on anatomic T1 and T2-weighted images but new techniques such as Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) and single-voxel 1H-MR spectroscopy (SV-MRS) tend to be used in order to better described the pathology and understand the underlying mechanisms. Several difficulties, includi...

Evaluation of Sensory Pathways in Spinal Cord by Comparison of fMRI Methodologies

Introduction: Today, clinicians and neuroscientists need to have a comprehensive survey of neurological pathologies and injuries. For the First-time, SEEP contrast and Spin-Echo pulse sequences was used for functional imaging of the Lumbar spinal cord. This method used by several research groups for Spinal cord mapping, but other researchers tried to improve BOLD fMRI to Spina...

Non-invasive diffusion tensor imaging detects white matter degeneration in the spinal cord of a mouse model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is characterized by selective degeneration of motor neurons. Here we examine the ability of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to measure axonal degeneration in the lumbar spinal cord of the SOD1 mouse model of ALS. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) was successful in detecting axonal spinal cord damage in vivo. Fractional anisotropy (FA) values were reduced exclus...
